Speed Cameras Save Lives

Speed camera enforcement is one of the most effective, evidence-based and low-cost measures to reduce speeding, save lives and prevent injuries.

Following a review of practice across Australia, the NSW Government announced changes to the NSW mobile speed camera program on 19 November 2020. Changes included increased enforcement hours and other program enhancements to motivate motorists to slow down and to reduce speed-related trauma.

Research has shown that best practice mobile speed camera programs reduce casualty crashes and create an anywhere-anytime expectation of detection, resulting in decreased speeding behaviour not just at camera locations, but across the whole road network.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole and Minister for Transport and Roads Rob Stokes announced a further change to the program on 17 December 2021, introducing rooftop signage on mobile camera vehicles to alert motorists that their speed has been checked.
