Children safer with upgrades around schools

Children walking to and from school are now safer after the completion of stage two of a $10 million program to improve pedestrian infrastructure.

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey today announced work has finished on upgrades to 140 schools as part of the program.

“New fencing, footpath work, raised crossings, kerb extensions, pedestrian refuges, new and clearer signs and splitter islands at roundabouts were installed,” Mrs Pavey said.

KEY POINTS

  • Stage 2 - The $5 million pedestrian safety infrastructure program provided grants of up to $50,000 to local councils to upgrade or install additional safety measures on local roads around schools
  • Stage 1 - $5 million was invested in additional school zone flashing lights at 504 school zones around the state
  • There have been no school aged pedestrian deaths in active school zones since December 2013

“I am proud the Liberals & Nationals Government is actively working to ensure our kids are safer walking near schools.”

“Roads and children can be a dangerous mix, which is the reason we are investing in making school zones as safe as possible to reduce the risk of tragedy.”

“We can all play our part in keeping our kids safe by sticking to school zone speed limits and constantly keeping an eye out for children who might run out onto the road unexpectedly,” Mrs Pavey said.
