Road Rules Awareness Week – Do You Know the Rules?

Drivers are being urged to brush up on their knowledge to potentially save lives and avoid penalties during Road Rules Awareness Week from 8-14 April.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said this year’s campaign is focusing on the three biggest killers; speeding, fatigue and drink driving.

"We want to put a stop to fatalities and the trauma suffered when people disregard, or aren’t aware of, the road rules. One life lost is one life too many," Mr Constance said.

Speeding remains the greatest cause of death and injury on NSW roads. Thirty-nine per cent of the 354 road fatalities last year were speed related and 71 per cent of those in country areas.

"We know human error is a huge factor in crashes so it’s important all road users understand the rules, obey the signs and remain vigilant. We all need to work together towards achieving a road toll of zero," Mr Constance said.

This year’s campaign is also shining a light on the most misunderstood road rules, including those around pedestrian safety and traffic intersections.

In 2018, 67 pedestrians were killed on NSW roads, up 13 from the year before. Pedestrians, especially the elderly, are among our most vulnerable road users. Both pedestrians and drivers both have a role to play in helping them keep safe on the road.

"People may consider themselves good drivers but knowing the road rules such as who has right of way at an intersection, and what different signs and traffic signals mean is an important part of road safety," Mr Constance said.

Centre for Road Safety Executive Director, Bernard Carlon will be live on Facebook on Tuesday 9 April at 5.30pm taking road rule-related enquiries from all road users. Take part via www.facebook.com/nswroadsafety.
