Safe Systems in local communities
The Safe System approach provides a framework to improve safety across all aspects of our road transport system for all road users.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Governments at all levels, employers, community organisations and road safety advocates can do their bit to promote safer speeds, vehicles, roads, and behaviours. Adopting the Safe System approach reduces the chance that a small mistake will result in someone’s death or a serious injury.

What does Safe System look like in the community?
We partner with local government to deliver a safe road environment for road users through continual improvements in design, construction and development of the road network.

For schools on a regional or local road, the local council is responsible for:
- parking – changes to restrictions, signs
- road repairs
- pedestrian and children’s crossings
- maintaining dragon’s teeth and patches
- installing traffic calming devices, including speed humps and roundabouts
- off-road shared paths, cycle paths and walking trails
- new and replacement Children’s Crossing flags
- courtesy speed checks (determined by the council if required)
- installing or moving a bus zone or bus stop
- footpaths – installation and maintenance
- road signs maintenance
- road surface repairs.
Local councils may apply for funding for appropriate safety works under the Safer Roads Program.

Safe System Assessment Framework
The Austroads ‘Safe System Assessment Framework’ research report helps road agencies methodically consider Safe Systems objectives in road infrastructure projects.
The framework helps measure how closely road design and operation align with the Safe System objectives, and clarifies elements that need to be modified to achieve closer alignment.
The report includes a template to complete an assessment and practical case study examples.
Training
‘Safe System Solutions’ offer education for Safe Systems Assessment training. The course provides the skills and tools participants need to undertake a Safe System Assessment in line with the Austroads Safe System Assessment Framework. View all training workshops.
